Corps asks people to stay safe on the lakes over holiday weekend

The Army Corps of Engineers is asking everyone to stay safe on the lakes this Labor Day Weekend.

Labor Day weekend is upon us, and the weather is looking agreeable for a family outing at an area lake or river.  Don’t forget to practice good water safety habits to help ensure a fun-filled outing free from needless injury.
Officials with the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District, which covers much of Arkansas and southern Missouri, say weather forecasters call for a chance of thundershowers Sunday in many parts of the district before temperatures cool somewhat.
The officials point to five steps to reduce the risk of a water-related accident.

1.  Check the weather, and remember forecasts can change. Keep checking.
2.  Avoid alcoholic beverages.  They are not needed to have fun.
3.  Supervise children every second.  Keep them within reach.
4.  Use the buddy system.  Always swim with someone.
5.  Always wear a life jacket.

Little Rock District offers public parks at 12 lakes in Arkansas and Missouri and all along the Arkansas River in Arkansas.  Among the lakes are Beaver, Blue Mountain, Bull Shoals, Clearwater, DeQueen, Dierks, Gillham, Greers Ferry, Millwood, Nimrod, Norfork and Table Rock.
