Debate continues on Springfield’s E-Verify requirement to stop hiring of illegals
Debate among the Springfield City Council members continues over the proposal to enforce the use of E-Verify by all businesses hiring workers in the Queen City.
The Council met Tuesday and members said they would agree t the proposal as long as changes could be made. The primary objection of some on the Council is the imposition of fines for those businesses who fail to use E-Verify and hire illegal aliens. Under state law, businesses could lose their license if the hire illegals.
Before the meeting, a small group of protestors rallied and called for the Council to defeat the measure. However, those in favor pointed out they simply wanted to force businesses into following existing law.
The Council is expected to vote on the measure on September 6. If they decide to turn down the proposal, it will go before the voters for approval.
