DSS to hold free vision clinic
The Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Taney County Health Department will sponsor a free eye-screening clinic in Taney County on Thursday, October 13, 2011. The clinic will be held at the Branson RecPlex, 1500 Branson Hills Parkway, in Branson, Missouri, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The examinations will be conducted by the University of Missouri Hospital & Clinics’ Department of Ophthalmology of Columbia, with assistance from the DSS Prevention of Blindness Unit. While they cannot write prescriptions for glasses, persons attending the clinic will be screened for such visual disorders as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, as well as malformations or malfunctions of the eye, such as strabismus (crossed-eyes), and other vision problems.
Those attending the clinic that are diagnosed as having a visual problem requiring specific treatment and further examination will be referred to local eye care specialists for follow-up. Individuals who meet Prevention of Blindness (POB) Program eligibility guidelines will be assisted by POB program staff with necessary eye care services.
Interested persons are advised to call early to schedule an appointment, because the October 13th eye clinic will be cancelled if there is not enough community interest. To schedule appointments for the free eye screenings prior to the clinic date, call the Taney County Health Department at 417-334-4544 or visit our website at www.taneycohealth.org.
