Expect detour on Route 60

Starting Monday, Sept. 19, Route 60 will be CLOSED into mid-November at the bridge over the Spring River and County Road 1150 west of Aurora, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
The deck on the bridge will be removed, repairs made and a new deck built.
The bridge is scheduled to be reopened to traffic during the week of Nov. 14.
Detour
While the bridge is closed, traffic will be detoured along Business Route 60 through Aurora and Verona.

The signed detour adds two miles for drivers who use Route 60 through Aurora.

However, the detour on Business Route 60 will increase travel time by several minutes. That’s because traffic will have to slow down through busy areas, with many businesses and residential neighborhoods, along with driveways and side streets.

MoDOT and contractors have alerted law enforcement, fire and ambulance agencies so they can plan how to respond to emergency calls with the bridge closed.

Information also is going out to chambers of commerce and large employers in the area as well as school districts.

Electronic message boards with information on the closing were put up along Route 60 on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

County Road 1150 Closings

At times during construction, County Road 1150 underneath the Route 60 bridge will have to be closed for short periods as a safety precaution because of the type of work being done on the bridge above.

A flagger will stationed on County Road 1150 to stop traffic when necessary and then wave drivers through underneath the bridge.

State highway traffic normally is not detoured onto county-maintained roads. However, local drivers familiar with the area will be able to use nearby county roads for another route around the closed bridge.

Safe & Sound

The bridge work is being done as part of MoDOT’s Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program to repair or replace 802 bridges in poor condition across the state by the end of 2013.

Under Safe & Sound, closing a bridge to repair or replace it greatly reduces the time needed to do the job, reduces the cost and improves safety by keeping traffic away from the work area.

Background

The Route 60/Spring River bridge, built in 1961, is 302 feet long. Its deck has needed frequent repairs in recent years and needs to be replaced. The bridge’s substructure is in good condition.

The prime contractor on the rehabilitation project is Robertson Contractors Inc. of Poplar Bluff, doing the work for a low-bid amount of $431,919.
