Federal judge grants confidentiality to some records in Republic School District rape case
A U.S. District Court judge has granted a request that certain records filed in the Republic Middle School rape lawsuit be kept confidential.
A special education student says in that lawsuit that she was harassed, assaulted and raped by a classmate but that school officials did not believe her and expelled her for filing a false report. When she was allowed back in school, the same boy raped her at school, the suit claims. She seeks unspecified damages.
After the case received a firestorm of publicity — including from national news sources — lawyers for both the girl and the district sought to close records. The judge granted the request Friday.
