Former senator supports clean coal at state fair

On Thursday, Former Senator Kit Bond joined Missouri State Fair visitors at the America’s Power Mobile Classroom during its multi-state tour sponsored by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity. Over 7,000 people have visited the mobile classroom since the tour kicked off in Columbus, Ohio on July 30th, 2011. The classroom helps educate area fairgoers about the benefits of coal and the success of clean coal technology.
“With 81 percent of Missouri’s electricity coming from coal, clean coal technology is certain to play an important role in lighting Missouri for years to come,” said Senator Bond. “The America’s Power Mobile Classroom is a great way for people to learn how clean coal technology will impact Missouri’s energy future.”
Clean coal technology refers to many different technologies that exist, or are being developed, to reduce air emissions from coal-fueled power plants. Most of these technologies can be retrofitted on existing plants, while others are incorporated into the design of new plants.
Over the past 30 years, America’s coal-based electricity providers have invested more than $90 billion in technologies to reduce emissions of major air pollutants. These investments have paid great dividends for the environment. Thanks to clean coal technology, major air pollutants from coal-fueled power plants are more than 80 percent lower (per kilowatt hour of electricity generated) than 30 years ago.
Coal is especially important to Missouri, generating 81 percent of the state’s electricity. An analysis released earlier this year by energy economist Eugene Trisko notes in 2010, Missouri households with annual incomes below $50,000, representing 55% of Missouri’s population, spent an estimated average of 20% of their after-tax income on energy. But thanks to coal, electricity prices have remained stable relative to other energy sources.
The “America’s Power Mobile Classroom.” tour is sponsored by the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE), a national, non-profit organization.
