Galena Mayor reflects on county’s 160th anniversary
September 24, 2011, a memorable day that will never happen again, Stone County’s 160th Anniversary, in Galena, Mo. The day began with vendors setting up and selling foods, drinks, crafts, and many other items of interest. They covered three sides of the square. At 10:00 am, the military part of the parade began our ninety years and over youngsters, followed by the Color Guard and many of our military personnel in old Jeeps, and the Reeds Springs band. Later, in a moving ceremony to honor our USA Military, the Master of Ceremonies, George Scott, in a solemn voice filled with emotion, spoke about those who have served our country, our county and our city. Taps and Amazing Grace left many with teary eyes; myself included.
After the military ceremony ended, the parade began, with floats, school bands (love those drums) old cars and horses pulling carriages and wagons. The Historical Society is to be commended for the hard work and careful planning that went into this beautiful event, and the dresses worn by many of the ladies added a colorful reminiscence of days gone by. After the parade, there was a live band who played wonderful music to suit young and old. The festivities ended at 5:00, and it was great to see everyone clean up after themselves to leave the square in a pristine condition. My heart was filled with gratitude for the many who played a part in making this happen: Naming only a few, Lois Watkins, Marty Bennett, George and Jo Scott, Sharon Bennett, and all of those from the Historical Society; the Vietnam Honor Guard, the Sheriff’s Department; the vendors, and the many Church groups who all brought about such a successful celebration (it would take the entire newspaper to name you all, but you know who you are, and how grateful I am for your contributions to the success of this day.) Thank you all; this just shows us what we can accomplish when everyone works together with teamwork and cooperation.
