Governor Jay Nixon’s son was cited for marijuana possession last weekend.
Authorities were called to an apartment complex about a noise complaint on September 10, 2011, allegedly noticed marijuana on a table inside the apartment and then saw Wilson Nixon, 21, who is a junior at the University of Missouri-Columbia try and conceal it.
Columbia’s city code doesn’t allow police to take in someone caught with a small amount of reefer; they only issue citations. And the maximum fine is $250. Police were called to a loud party a few block from the University of Missouri campus.
Officers reported that they “smelled a strong odor of marijuana” in the hallway of the complex. Officers then spotted a pipe loaded with marijuana sitting on a coffee table of an apartment.
According to police, Nixon allegedly tried to “get rid” of it by throwing it on the ground.
The governor issued a statement Monday calling his son “a fine young man” and the marijuana citation “a private matter that will be handled through the municipal process.”
Since Wilson Nixon allegedly possessed less than 35 grams of pot the incident will be handled in municipal court.
