Kirbyville woman convicted of fraud

A jury in Greene County has convicted a Kirbyville woman of defrauding customers.
Edna “Kay” Jackson, the former owner of Dogwood Homes, was convicted of seven counts of defrauding consumers and will be sentenced on January 13th, according to a news release from Attorney General Chris Koster.

In January 2010, Jackson and her son, Michael Jackson, were ordered in a civil case to pay $1.28 million to more than 30 people who lost money in the scheme. At least one of those consumers has passed away without receiving compensation.
In the scheme, Kay Jackson would collect the money from the customers, and either fail to deliver the homes or clear titles to the bank or the customers.
“Kay Jackson defrauded people of tens of thousands of their hard-earned dollars,” Koster said.. “This office is committed to enforcing consumer-protection laws and arduosly prosecuted this case. I’m pleased with the result and commend the jury on the verdict.”

Jackson could receive four years in prison on each count and a fine of up to $5,000 per count when she is sentenced on January 13, 2012.
