Old school in Reeds Spring may have new life soon – legend says old life lives on

The old high school in Reeds Spring may soon be a community center and a meeting place for the Boys and Girls Club of the Ozarks

The Boys and Girls Club of the Ozarks has taken a first step in obtaining a potential permanent location in Stone County following a meeting with the City of Reeds Spring earlier this week. The location will bring with it some local history too.
Reeds Spring Mayor, Paul Leer, said the meeting was well-attended and the concept of selling the building was met with enthusiasm by most of those present.
When the club received a grant for either staff or a building, the organization looked for a location in Stone County. Currently the club meets at the school and their new location, if finalized, will also be in a school, this time the historic old Reeds Spring High School.
The school was built in 1936 and was a WPA project.
The building, currently used as the district’s administration building, will be vacated in 2012 when the administration moves to the vacated TCRC portion of the High School. TCRC was closed earlier this year due to lack of funding.
Preliminary plans call for the old high school to be much more than just the Boys and Girls Club, however. The vision is for a community center and possibly an indoor swimming pool for the area.
For those who believe in such things, there is a local legend, as found online at www.strangeusa.com, which reports a possible haunting in the school’s gym.
” Late at night a basketball can be heard as if the person who used to play for the school team was still there.
“Many years ago he was killed when a group of buddies skipped school to run around. His funeral was held in the gym with his coffin located underneath the goal. It is there that the ghost plays his basketball,” the site states.
