Protests planned at Repubic School District over handling of student rape case
A group of concerned citizens is planning two protests today, demanding the resignation of the Republic School District superintendent, Vern Minor, the middle school principal, Shelly Sprague and the middle school counselor. The protests are a result of publicity surrounding the manner in which the district handled the raping of a student last year.
According to court papers, that was the second rape of the girl, by the same student, over a two-year period.
The first protest is scheduled to take place during tonight’s school board meeting and a second one is planned two hours later, at the middle school.
A male juvenile student from Republic Middle School was charged with sexual assault in juvenile court, having a hearing on May 13, 2010. He was laced into the custody of the state. That hearing was for the second rape.
A federal suit has also been filed against the district by the parents of the girl involved.
