Recycle center to be heated with used motor oil

Waste oil heater at recycle center

The city of Branson will be saving some money while providing heat this winter for the first time at its recycle center.
A household chemical collections facility located inside the recycle center accepts used motor oil and other household chemicals from citizens in Taney County. Previously, the used motor oil had to be disposed of through incineration provided by a licensed contractor, at an average cost of $700 a year. Now a new waste-oil heater will burn the oil onsite and provide heat for the recycle center.
“For the past 20 years our employees only had a little space heater to keep the recycle center warm even during the coldest months,” said Mona Menezes, Branson’s environmental specialist. “Now they will have real heating, and it’s provided through energy recapture of what was considered a waste product. Furthermore, it eliminates the cost of disposal. A real win-win for the city and the environment,”
The new heater was purchased using grant funds from DNR’s Solid Waste District N.
