Reeds Spring Sports in review Oct. 10, 2011
The Varsity Lady Wolves Softball team captured their second consecutive Class 3 District Championship by defeating the tournament’s host school, Ava, by the score of 8-6 on October 8. Trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning, the Lady Wolves broke loose as Marley Harmon blasted a three run homer to put the Varsity ladies on the board. The Lady Wolves scored three more runs in the inning to take a 6-5 lead. After Ava tied the contest in the sixth inning, Reeds Spring came back on the strength of two RBI’s by Hailee Mason to seal the victory. Morgan Cantrell and Andrea Studer added two hits each to help pace the offensive attack. The Lady Wolves advanced to the championship contest by defeating Forsyth in the tournament semifinals by the score of 12-6 on October 6. Sam Retherford and Andrea Studer each contributed three hits in that game while Morgan Cantrell had a triple and four RBI’s to lead the offense. Retherford also had three RBI’s in the victory. The Varsity team completed their regular season schedule with a 1-0 loss at Monett on October 3. The Jr. Varsity team also lost their contest at Monett to finish their season. The Jr. Varsity team ended their season with an overall record of six wins and six losses. The Varsity ladies took an overall record of 17-11 into the first round of the State Class 3 Tournament at Sullivan on October 12. A victory in that contest will allow the Lady Wolves to host a State Quarterfinal game at Reeds Spring on October 15 at 12:00 PM against either Nevada or Monett.
The Varsity Football team traveled to Marshfield for a Central Ozark Conference contest on October 7. The Wolves fell to the Blue Jays in a high scoring 48-34 affair. The Varsity Wolves led by the score of 27-26 at halftime on the strength of touchdown runs by Josh Gronvold and Ryan Pearman and a 32 yard reverse play by Wide Receiver Aaron Allphin. Gronvold also scored from the defensive side of the ball as he intercepted a pass and scored on an 80 yard return. The Wolves final touchdown of the night came on a 40 yard pass from Quarterback Easton Flaugh to Dallas Dodson on a fourth down and eleven play in the middle of the third quarter. Caleb Asbill converted four of his five extra point attempts for the evening to complete the scoring. Gronvold accumulated 126 yards on eight carries while Pearman had 63 yards on eleven carries to lead the Wolves offense. The Jr. Varsity team won their contest for the week against Buffalo to even their season record at 3-3 while both the seventh and eighth grade teams picked up victories for the week in their games at Hollister. The eighth grade team hosted Marshfield on October 6 in a game that was postponed from an earlier date. The eighth grade team gained a victory in that contest as well. Both seventh and eighth grade teams carry an overall record of 3-1 for the season. The Varsity team will travel to Aurora for their first District contest of the season on October 14 while the Jr. Varsity team will host Aurora for their final contest of the season on October 17. The seventh and eighth grade teams will play their final games of the season at home against Willard on October 18.
The Varsity and Jr. Varsity Volleyball teams hosted Springfield Parkview on October 3 and Springfield Catholic on October 6 in addition to traveling to Marshfield on October 4. In a non-conference contest, the Varsity team fell to Parkview in two games by the scores of 23-25 and 28-20. The Varsity ladies pushed Marshfield to three games before falling to the Lady Blue Jays in a Central Ozark Conference contest by the scores of 25-20, 17-25 and 23-25. In their final game of the week, the Varsity team lost a COC match to Springfield Catholic by the scores of 20-25 and 19-25. The Jr. Varsity team defeated Parkview but lost to Marshfield and Catholic in their contests for the week. After winning the championship of the Marshfield 7th Grade Tournament, the seventh grade team defeated Bolivar in their only game of the week. The eighth grade team also picked up a victory over Bolivar. The Varsity team will participate in the Ozark Grand Slam Tournament on October 15 before finishing the regular season along with the Jr. Varsity team in contests at Rogersville on October 18 and Branson on October 21. The seventh grade team will participate in the COC Tournament at Hollister on October 15 before traveling to Buffalo along with the eighth grade team on October 18.
The Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams participated in the Springfield Catholic Irish Invitational Meet on October 4. The Boys team finished eleventh overall. Tony Miceli finished in twenty-third place in individual competition with a time of 18:03.90 minutes. Sam Akromis placed thirty first in individual competition in the Girls Division with a time of 23:21.90 minutes. The Boys and Girls teams will compete in an Invitational Meet at Fayetteville, Arkansas on October 15 before hosting their own Invitational Meet on October 22.
