Springfield may get Veterans’ Clinic
Springfield will be getting a Veterans’ Outpatient Clinic, as the feds look to replace the one in Mount Vernon – maybe.
The bill which authorizes $6.5 million for a veterans’ outpatient clinic in Springfield was signed into law by President Barack Obama.
The clinic was proposed as part of the Department of Veterans Affairs Strategic Capital Investment Program. It will open in the fall of 2014.
However, the actual construction of the clinic depends on Congress providing funding through the budgeting process.
The Springfield clinic would be a replacement for the clinic in Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon clinic is within a 30-minute drive for about 17,000 veterans; the new facility would increase that number by nearly 7,000.
If the clinic is built It would become one of about 800 community-based outpatient clinics scattered across the country for veterans who live several hours from the nearest VA hospital.
One of three veterans enrolled with the VA live in rural areas. Missouri currently has 22 VA outpatient clinics.
