State House and Senate can’t agree

Unlikely to admit defeat Thursday, the Missouri House searched for a negotiation with senators over a package of business benefits that now seems dead.
Lawmakers have been gathering since September in a special legislative session that is centered on a proposal to reduce some of Missouri’s existing tax credits and create new incentives for international shippers at the St. Louis airport, computer data centers and certain other businesses.
However, the House and Senate, which are both led by Republicans, have been unable to agree on how to accomplish the task.
The House voted Thursday to ask for a formal negotiating session with the Senate. That request seemed unlikely to be fulfilled mainly because the Senate has not planned any further sessions where votes could be taken and decided this week not to seek further discussions. The special session will automatically expire Nov. 5 under the Missouri Constitution.
