State lawmakers have better retirement plan than state workers
With many Americans upset over members of Congress’s rate of pay, special health care plans and a retirement that’s far better than the government imposed Social Security, word comes that retirement benefits for Missouri lawmakers are better than those the same politicians provide for state workers.
lawmakers have given themselves pensions since the Missouri State Employee’s Retirement System (MOSERS) was formed in 1957.
However the multiplying formula for state lawmakers is far more liberal than the one used for workers – proving lawmakers with twice the amount a state worker receives.
While a state worker has to have 10 years of service to be eligible for a retirement benefit, those who made the law only need six.
A small number of State Reps (Democrats) are looking to overturn that trend and want lawmakers to fall under the same guidelines and formula as state workers.
One reason given by proponents of the current system point to term limits as a reason for the six year requirement – although a State representative could run for State Senate, giving them up to 16 years of possible service.
As for the multiplying formula that provides them with double the amount of workers, they have no clear answer.
