Statement by Kansas City AFL-CIO President Duke Dujakovich on Occupy Kansas City
We stand in solidarity with workers, students, seniors, unemployed and underemployed Missourians and those across the country demanding an end to out-of-control corporate greed.
It is time for our elected officials to be accountable to their constituents and work for good jobs
Workers, students and seniors have taken to the streets in Kansas City and across the country, demanding that politicians work for all of us-the 99% that have been left behind in this devastating economy. From Wall Street to Main Street, people are on their feet and speaking out.
People are frustrated-and angry-and it isn’t hard to see why. Our city and state has been hit hard by the wrecking ball of out-of-control corporate greed. With an unemployment rate that is still painfully high, families are continuing to lose their homes and their hope. Students face a bleak future after graduation. This jobs crisis has been unrelenting. Reckless and greedy corporations and their millionaire and billionaire CEOs have shipped away good jobs and shut millions of families out of the middle class. Rather than being “job creators,” by hoarding resources and limiting investments, these short-sighted privateers are killing jobs and our communities.
Too many of our elected officials listen only to the CEOs and Wall Street bankers that wrecked the economy, ignoring their own constituents. In Jefferson City and in Washington D.C., middle class Missourians are under attack by politicians working for corporate CEOs and shady special interests. This devastating jobs crisis isn’t going to be solved by weakening collective bargaining and attacking the workers that serve our communities ever day, like firefighters and teachers.
As teachers and construction workers, cashiers and bus drivers join students and seniors, the jobless-and those that are working two jobs just to get by–we call upon politicians to hear their voices and start working for their constituents. Workers coming together built the middle class in Kansas City and across the country, and it is time for politicians to work together with workers to rebuild the middle class.
Wall Street and corporate America wrecked our economy, and it is time that banks and big corporations step up to fix it. It is time they invest in America and start creating the kind of good jobs that support a family, rebuilding our infrastructure and improving our schools. Foreclosures and the flood of underwater mortgages must be halted so families can stay in their homes and our communities can recover. To achieve the American Dream, we have to support the 99% of Americans, not just a wealthy and powerful few..
